Guide to site
Welcome to the new web pages of the EPW.
The site has
- Many new interactive features
- A vastly enhanced search facility
- A much larger archive that will eventually go back to 1949
- Improved design for better access and reading.
It is also now possible to subscribe to EPW on-line using a secure payment gateway, making subscription a much simpler process.
Access to the site is described below and each feature of the site is explained. A more detailed explanation can be had by moving the cursor over the title of each feature/category.
- General Access: EPW is committed to providing visitors free access to a very large amount of its published material. All visitors can:
- Read and download the entire contents of the latest issue of EPW
- Read the previous 4 issues of EPW (including Review and Special issues, if any)
- Search for all articles published since 2000 and read the abstracts
- Comment in the Blog and Open Review sections
- Subscribe to Content Alert
- Read articles provided in the Featured Themes section
- See the contents and abstracts of archived Special Issues and Review Issues
Only subscribers to EPW need to log in. Casual visitors can read the current issue and four most recent issues without following a log in procedure, which was the earlier practice.
We would like our regular visitors to note that we are changing the terms of access to the site.
From now on only print/web subscribers will be able to access the archives. As EPW is independently published
by a charitable trust without any commercial interests we regret we need to moderate free access to archival resources.
We depend entirely on income from circulation, advertising and a small corpus and need the support of our readers, writers and
advertisers. As India's most well known journal of critical inquiry, we trust that all of you will support us in this endeavour.
- Subscriber Categories: There will now be two categories of subscribers:
- Print Subscribers: Subscribers will receive the print edition every week and also have access to the entire contents of the EPW site, including the Archives. (See the "Subscribe" link on home page for categories and rates)
- Web Subscribers: A new category of web subscription is now available to users who do not wish to have the print edition but would like access to the Archives. For a very modest annual subscription, readers of the web edition will have complete access to all features of the site. (See the "Subscribe" link on home page for categories and rates)
- Subscriber Access: Print and web subscribers of the EPW will have additional access to:
- Articles in the archives dating back to 2001.
- Articles in the Archives(1966-1998), covering the period 1949 to 1966 (Economic Weekly) and 1966 to 1998 (EPW). This section is under construction.
- Articles in the archived Special and Review Issues sections.
- Institutional Subscribers: Institutions which have subscribed to EPW will have complete access to the site and can provide all their members with access. Institutions may write to circulation@epw.org.in about the procedure.
- Search: The new Search facility is based on a comprehensive list of keywords and searches the title, author(s) and abstract. It is better organised than before and facilitates easy identification:
- All users can search the Current Issue, Past four Issues, Archives (2001 onwards) (Drop down menu in top of the page)
- All users can also use an Advanced Search facility.
- All users can read the abstracts of the relevant results.
- Only subscribers can read/download the full article where they have been retrieved from the archives. (All users can read articles retrieved from the current and four most recent issues of EPW).
- Subscriber account:
- This box needs to be filled in only by print/web subscribers and is their log in process. Current subscribers will be provided a password (Please write to circulation@epw.org.in). All new subscribers can give their own passwords.
- Those wishing to subscribe can fill in the details and use the on-line secure payment gateway to pay by credit card. Those wishing to pay by cheques/DDs etc can continue to do so, and send us their payment by post.
- The subscription page can also be reached via "Subscribe" panel on the left
- Archives: EPW's archives contain all articles published in the journal since 2001.
They are now entirely in PDF format, with the original pagination so that readers can refer to the exact page numbers when citing work.
(The Archives can be searched through the Search facility (top of home page) or through Archives in the left panel. Please note these
Archives cover only 2001 to the present. Earlier volumes will be posted on the Archives(1966-1998). The latter will also have a separate search.
- Open Reviews:
A number of international journals are moving away from closed "peer reviews" of research papers and towards an "Open Review" system. In the new system, anyone can comment on a paper submitted for publication and transparency is ensured by asking readers to comment on the web page of the journal.
As an experiment, EPW will occasionally post a submission -- after consultation with the author -- on the web and invite comments. The paper will be on the web site for a month, at the end of which EPW will discuss the posted comments with the author and ask for revision where appropriate.
- EPW will occasionally consult with an author and post her/his paper (PDF version) submitted for publication on the Open Review section.
- Readers will be invited to comment on the paper and the comments will be posted on-line
- The paper will be on the site for 4 weeks
- At the end of this period, EPW will discuss all the comments with the author and identify those which have to be addressed by the author in a revised version. The revised version will then be published in the print edition and posted on the web site.
- At any time there will be four papers in the Open Review section. Since this is an experimental feature, comments will be moderated.
- Visitors are encouraged to be substantively critical but EPW will remove all offensive comments
- EPW intends to enhance participation and involvement of the research community through this innovative feature and depending on the response, may increase its scope in the future. All papers will not be posted on the web site for comments.
Visitors to the EPW web site and readers of the journal are encouraged to participate in the process and offer detailed comments. Please list your names and addresses; entry of the email address is essential.
- EPW Blog: The new site introduces a blog for visitors. Every week four articles from the latest issue will be posted on the EPW Blog site and readers invited to comment on them. All visitors, not just subscribers, are encouraged to offer comments. The selected articles will be on the site for a week. Commentators will be encouraged to be critical and substantive but not abusive in their comments. The blogs will initially be moderated. Depending on feedback, the number of articles offered for comment will gradually be increased.
- Featured Themes: Since the EPW archives are a vast repository of articles published on a range of subjects, the site will every week pull a selection of articles from its past editions that are relevant to a contemporary issue. For example, in a week when the Supreme Court delivers its judgement on the Ninth Schedule, EPW will post articles from its archives which have dealt with the subject. These articles, available to all visitors to the site, would serve as background material for readers. These articles would be changed every week/fortnight.
- Special Issues: In recent years, EPW has been increasingly been publishing articles around themes. All special issues since January 2004 are listed in this section. The articles in each special issue are listed and abstracts available for all users. Subscribers can read and download the articles which have been published more than a month earlier; all visitors to the site can read the more recent special issues.
- Review Issues: As regular readers are aware, EPW publishes review issues on a variety of subjects. These include: (i) Agriculture, (ii) Women's Studies, (iii) Industry and Management, (iv) Labour and (v) Science Policy. This section of the site lists all the Review Issues since January 2001, enabling readers to see the article titles in each issue and read the abstracts. Subscribers can read and download the articles which have been published more than a month earlier; all visitors to the site can read the more recent review issues.
- Archives(1966-1998) In an ambitious project, EPW hopes to digitise all its
content starting from 1949 (Economic Weekly 1949 to 1966) upto the present. In the first stage the content from
1966 to 1998 will be posted on the site, later this will hopefully be extended back to 1949.
- The pages are under construction and will be operational before the end of 2007
- In the first stage image PDF files be hosted and readers can search if they know the issue number of the article they are looking for.
- Later html/text pdf files with full search facility will be posted.
- For now, readers cannot search these pages with the regular "Search" feature or from the "Archives" section, but by using a separate search feature.
- Access will be available only to print/web subscribers.
- Payment Gateway: Visitors now have a simple and safe way to subscribe to the
print/web editions of EPW. They can use the secure payment gateway system to pay by credit/debit card or from (selected) bank accounts.
The payment gateway is run by CC Avenue and offers secure facilities to make credit card payments.
CC Avenue's payment gateway services are used by scores of India's leading companies and retailers.
- The payment gateway is the last stage of the subscription process (approached from "Want to Subscribe?" or "Subscribe")
- There are two gateways: one for subscribers based in India and the others for those in the rest of the world. These will be automatically configured after the subscriber fills in the subscription form.
- Those wishing to subscribe by payment through cheques/demand drafts can continue to do so.
- Left Panels: The panels on the left provide similar information as the ones on the right and some additional details as well:
- EPW Issues: The links here take you to (i) contents page of latest issue, (ii) contents page of last week's issue, (iii) contents page of four most recent issues and (iv) Search page of Archives.
- EPWRF: the link takes you straight to the home page of the EPW Research Foundation
- Subscribe: Links on this panel give you information on subscription rates for print and web subscribers. They also take you to the subscription page for payment through the payment gateway.
- Publications: Details of books published by Sameeksha Trust, CDs of EPW issues and back issues.
- Advertisements: Details of advertisements on jobs, conference announcements and fellowships.
- For Contributors: Guidelines for contributors in making submission, style sheet for contributors (latter under construction)
- Write to The Editor: Email form for sending letters to the editor for consideration of publication.
